Scientific collaborator with skills in statistical data analysis and
programming

Description:
We seek a scientific collaborator with good experience in statistical
data analysis and programming to work with us in the project
“SimSurvey” for a period of 12 months (50% part-time employment). The
project "SimSurvey" is an e-learning project funded by ETH Zürich. The
aim is to develop a web-based simulation tool which will be used in
teaching spatial statistics (geostatistics) and survey strategies to
students of environmental sciences and related fields. "SimSurvey" will
offer teachers of such courses the possibility to create scenarios that
mimic the spatial distribution of soil pollutants around diffuse and
point sources. The students then can practice to find optimal sampling
designs in order to map and reconstruct the spatial pattern of the
pollutants, with the help of classical statistical as well as modern
geostatistical tools. The successful candidate will join a team of 4
environmental scientists and engineers and will be mainly responsible
to implement the necessary geostatistical functions for "SimSurvey" in
the programming language R and to design a numerically efficient
interface to PHP.

Education:
Candidates are expected to have a sound basis in statistics, in
particular with respect to spatial statistics and sampling, and they
should have advanced programming skills (preferably knowledge of the
programming language R). Candidates with a diploma or master degree in
environmental sciences or engineering, mathematics or statistics or an
equivalent qualification are preferred. Experience in developing
teachware and e-learning tools is not a prerequisite, but very welcome.
