Friday, April 8, 2005, 15.15, LEO C15
Protein Folding and Structure Prediction - A Statistician's View
Ingo Ruczinski, Department of Biostatistics,
Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University
Many apparently unrelated diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cystic
fibrosis, and various cancers result from protein folding gone wrong.
Understanding the actual folding pathways of proteins therefore could
have a tremendous impact on public health, however, this issue remains
largely unsolved. Many experiments carried out to understand the folding
pathway from the unfolded state to the folded functional state generate
data that have interesting statistical aspects, which we will discuss in
this seminar. We will also briefly touch on statistical issues in ab
initio protein structure prediction and its applications, such as the
functional annotation of genes.
