Random Laguerre Tessellations with Application
to Foam Modelling

Random tessellations are classical models from stochastic geometry which
are used in a wide range of application areas. The most well-known models
are Voronoi and Johnson-Mehl (additively weighted Voronoi) tessellations. A
huge number of results for moments and distributions of their cell
characteristics exists.
Laguerre (or power) tessellations are another type of weighted Voronoi
tessellations which possess very promising properties. In this talk, we are
going to discuss geometrical properties of random Laguerre
tessellations. The focus is on tessellations generated by a homogeneous
marked Poisson process. Formulas for some cell characteristics such as the
intensity of vertices or the edge length density are given.
One important application of random tessellations is the modelling of
cellular materials, e.g. foam structures. Physical properties of a foam,
for instance elasticity or thermal conductivity, heavily depend on its
microstructure. Therefore, an understanding of the reaction of these
properties to changes of the microstructure is crucial for the optimization
of foams for given applications. The use of foam models is a powerful tool
for studying these relations.
Both deterministic tessellations such as the Kelvin or the Weaire-Phelan
foam and random Voronoi tessellations are frequently used as foam
models. We propose the use of random Laguerre tessellations, since these
models are more flexible and cover a wider range of distributions of cell
characteristics. Their application is discussed by the examples of a closed
polymer foam and an open ceramic foam.
