TITLE:
Dealing with unit level heterogeneity when estimating the size of a
closed population using capture-capture data
ABSTRACT:
This presentation is concerned with capture-recapture experiments where
the capture probabilities vary between units. The goal is to estimate
the population size N. Three cases are investigated. We first consider
experiments with two capture occasions. In this case, the only available
solution to deal with the heterogeneity is to measure, on the units
captured, the variables causing it. With more than two capture
occasions, the heterogeneity can be detected without covariables.
Estimating N is still difficult since the data does not allow a clear
characterization of the heterogeneity. The third situation considered
is that of a unit level heterogeneity in multi-list problems. The
estimation of N is then based on log-liner models featuring individual
list effects and list interactions. We will investigate the impact of a
unit level heterogeneity when using these models to estimate N.
