Close-Kin Mark-Recapture (CKMR)

ABSTRACT:

Mark-recapture (MR) methods are commonly used to study wildlife populations. Taking advantage of modern genetics one can generalize from “recapture of an individual” to “recapture of a closely-related kin”, and thereby the name Close-Kin Mark-Recapture (CKMR). The basic logic is: if your sample contains many close relatives (genetically determined) then your population is small, and wise versa. The probability distribution of the full genealogy of the individuals in the sample is intractable and hence one resorts to a pairwise pseudo likelihood approach. This creates a need to calculate the probability that pairs of sampled individuals are kin of a particular type. These probabilities can be obtained from classical demographic results for age-structured populations going back to Euler. In this talk I will give an overview of CKMR, and discuss (future) applications to fisheries and endangered species.
