  Asymptotic tests for the volume fraction of stationary random sets

This talk is based on joint research with Stephan Boehm and
Lothar Heinrich.

It is well known that the empirical volume fraction
of stationary random sets is asymptotically normal
under appropriate mixing conditions. This suggests
asymptotic tests to check, for example, an hypothetical
volume fraction if the asymptotic variance of the
empirical volume fraction can be estimated consistently.
In connection with this, a nonparametric kernel estimator
of the spectral density of stationary random sets is studied.
Conditions are derived under which this estimator is
asymptotically unbiased and mean-square consistent.
For the planar Boolean model with isotropic compact and convex grains,
an averaged version of the kernel estimator is compared with
the theoretical spectral density.

The results are applied to monitoring of groundwater quality in
Baden-Wuerttemberg.
